5 Books Every Aspiring Novelist Should Read This Summer

Summer is the perfect time to curl up with a great book, and that is what I am planning on doing. I have been researching books I want to read this summer, besides The Deal and all books by Elle Kennedy, but I will discuss that later.

Here are the five writing craft books that I plan to read this summer.

1. On Writing by Stephen King

Part memoir, part masterclass, Stephen King's On Writing is one of the most honest and practical books about the craft of writing ever published. King shares his own journey as a writer alongside no-nonsense advice on everything from vocabulary to plot. If you read only one book about writing this summer, make it this one.

2. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

Anne Lamott's beloved guide to writing and life is warm, funny, and deeply encouraging. Her famous advice to take things "bird by bird" — one small step at a time — is a lifeline for any novelist who feels overwhelmed by the enormity of writing a book. This one will make you laugh and get back to the page.

3. Story by Robert McKee

Originally written for screenwriters, Story is a masterclass in narrative structure that every novelist should read. McKee breaks down the principles of great storytelling in a way that is both rigorous and inspiring. Understanding story structure will transform the way you plan and write your novel.

4. The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron

If you've ever struggled with self-doubt, creative blocks, or the fear of putting your words on the page, The Artist's Way is for you. Julia Cameron's 12-week program helps you reconnect with your creative self and build a sustainable writing practice. It's part workbook, part spiritual guide — and it works.

5. Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody

Jessica Brody takes Blake Snyder's legendary screenwriting framework and applies it to novel writing with brilliant results. This book gives you a clear, practical structure for plotting your novel from beginning to end. If you love having a roadmap before you write, this is your summer essential.
